Home Office Furniture
 |
You're going to be sitting on it, behind it or next to it for a very long time so it pays to get it right from the outset, home office furniture is not an area where you want to sacrifice quality for cost.
|
Choosing an office chair
 |
The most important item of furniture in your office is, without a doubt, your office chair. This will be the home for your softer parts for many hours each day and you'll soon know about it if you get an uncomfortable chair.
Points to consider:
- You should be able to place the flat of your feet on the ground
- Your lower back should be supported by the base of the chair back
- Soft and comfortable is not necessarily the best for your back
- Chairs with casters are rendered immobile by thick carpet
- Uneven floors make sitting on a swivel chair a bit like a fairground ride

Choosing an Office Desk
 |
Next up on the list of office furniture is the desk, undoubtedly the second most important item of office furniture. If you're working from home rather than just doing the household paperwork then you're going to need space and lots of it. The best desks will take up as much room as you can spare, providing plenty of scope for spreading out in every direction.
Points to consider:
- Measure your room very carefully before buying the desk(s)
- Tiny 'computer desks' are not suitable for the home office as they don't have sufficient space to organise your work
- It's not uncommon for corners to be a little less or more than a right angle and older houses could be used to define acute and obtuse angles
- Think about sharp corners and what they will do to your hip bones when walking past
- If using computer equipment make sure that there are holes for the wires in sensible places
- Custom made desks can be the perfect solution for uneven rooms and needn't be that expensive, especially if you can DIY

Choosing Storage Space
 |
You're going to need somewhere to put things and as time goes on there are going to be plenty of things to put. Filing cabinets are an essential and will fit quite happily under your large desk but don't forget storage for those seldom used things that you need access to (spare reams of paper, fax rolls, inkjet cartridges).
Points to consider:
- Plan your storage according to frequency of access. If you're going to need it often,
don't stick it at the back
- Filing cabinet tops can extend your desk space
- High shelves are well out of the way and provide excellent storage space
- Large desks have masses of room underneath for storage
- Strong plastic boxes with clip on lids are superb stackable storage containers
