In the good old days of motoring unless you had somewhere out of the rain to store your car it would slowly dissolve (rapidly in the case of my Ford Escort Mark 1) into a brown rusty stain on the tarmac before your very eyes. The garage became a vital place to store the family transportation and doubled as a very useful place to tinker around with the little optional extra's, like an engine. Time moves on however and any car manufacturer can now produce a car that will hold up well even in Brecon where it hasn't stopped raining since 1963. Opening the garage doors, driving in and closing them again is just a little bit too much at the end of the usual working day without incentive, and so it has come to pass that the garage is no longer the resting place of its prized occupant.
It is estimated that over 85% of all UK households, that own a garage, use it for storage and well over half of these are unsure about what is actually being stored. As a spare, dry room the garage offers us the perfect place to practice the old adage 'out of sight, out of mind'. The problem is that over the weeks and months a slow moving tidal wave of junk starts at the back wall and gradually engulfs your entire garage.
Remember those new tools you bought last year or the gardening gloves that you were sure you just put down somewhere or that lost tribe of pigmies that you were sure were just below the useful paint can shelf? They're all in there and you'll never see them again unless you take swift and decisive action!
Your garage can be a wonderful addition to your house offering a ready made extension to be used for anything from a hobby room to a gym. In this section we hope to give you some practical tips and ideas for getting the most out of the most abused room in your house.
